British Complementary Therapies Councilapplication guidelines STEP 4 Guidelines to Application Step 4 – Grandparenting Rules What is Grandparenting? ‘Grandparenting’ is a process that allows anyone with experience in their chosen profession or field of work to gain the necessary training qualifications to meet new regulatory standards within a given time frame. The BCTC allows you entry onto the BCTC VSR Register pending achievement of full entry standards required to become a VSR-approved practitioner. This process is limited to a time period of 2 years. It is a standard minimum requirement that all applicants provide evidence of continuous practitioner insurance for 2 of the last 3 years. Why is Grandparenting needed? Entry to the VSR Register requires minimum standards of training, practice and expertise. Such regulation affords a reasonable measure of protection and safety towards the general public and demonstrates that VSR-approved therapists are competent to practice. You may be a highly experienced therapist who has been practising for years, and wish to join the BCTC Register but discover you lack the necessary training qualifications to meet our rigorous standards. Or you may be a newly qualified therapist who can meet our training requirements but lack sufficient clinical or practical experience for full entry. How does Grandparenting work? You complete the entry requirements as described in the Application Steps, completing the Grandparenting Section of the Application Form (use a separate sheet for each VSR approved therapy you want to include for consideration). What happens when I apply? Each application is assessed on its own merits & recommendations made according to the individual’s circumstances. Your application will be assessed by the Application Review Panel who may request additional information or recommend that you join a VSR approved therapy association. You will be expected to attend suitable CPD training during the grace period including, possibly, approved courses that lead to a qualification. If your application does not yet meet the criteria for the two year probationary period, we will notify you in writing and give recommendations for how to achieve Grandparenting status. You will then be eligible to apply again once those recommendations have been achieved. Proceed to Application Steps – Step 5
